Never Buy Brown Sugar Again

Another Pantry Staple I am NEVER Buying from the Store Again

When You Run Out of Brown Sugar….

I’m sure you have been there before: You are making chocolate chip cookies, and you go to get an ingredient only to realize you ran out. This happened to me the other day. I ran out of brown sugar mid recipe and didn’t have the ability to run to the store.

6 months ago I would have said, “Sorry kids, we will have to finish these cookies later”. But, now I know that it is simple, stupid simple, to make your own brown sugar.

It is so easy that I don’t understand why I never knew. I have literally not made a recipe because I didn’t have enough brown sugar. And that will never happen again. I am never buying it again because now I know that I can make it.

I’m NEVER Buying Brown Sugar Again

I’m never buying it again because all you need is sugar and molasses. I’m not kidding, that’s it. If you have one cup of sugar and one tablespoon of molasses you have what it takes to make brown sugar. Isn’t that wild?

I LOVE crossing off staples that I will never buy again, and brown sugar is one of them.

What Even is Molasses?

I did not grow up with very much experience with cooking, especially with molasses. It’s weird and sticky. Did you know that it is actually part of the sugar making process? Sugar is made from sugar cane or sugar beets. The sugarcane or sugar beet is crushed, and made into a juice. The juice is then boiled and crystals form, which turns into sugar. The leftover byproduct is actually molasses. If you want more information on molasses, you can find that here. And if you want to turn molasses into a history homeschool activity, you definitely need to check out this podcast episode from Real Cool History for kids about the molasses flood.

Making Brown Sugar

So, it’s so easy it feels silly to have a recipe post for it. However, maybe you are like me, and had absolutely no clue this was a thing. Pretty much every grocery store carries molasses and sugar. And if you’ve ever made gingerbread cookies, you probably already have it deep in your pantry somewhere. All you need is one cup of sugar to one tablespoon of molasses. Mix ingredients in a bowl. Both of these items are shelf stable and your brown sugar can now be stored in an airtight container. I like to use terra cotta to help keep the brown sugar soft.

Please let me know if you try this! Let me know in the comments, or snap a pic and tag me on social media! And congratulations on never having to buy another pantry staple again!

Much Love,
