Our First Month of Homeschool

Well, we did it. We are about to finish off our first month of homeschool…ever.

If you had asked me 6 years ago about this, I would probably have laughed at how ridiculous you sounded. Because you see, I didn’t grow up thinking homeschool was something I would ever want to do. I went to a private Christian school and homeschoolers were….weird. There was no way my kids would be weird, I wanted to make sure of that.

And so, of course, God laughed, and had me marry a guy who was homeschooled and loved it. And God kept laughing as I saw how creative my husband is and how much he thought out of the box. Then God REALLY started laughing as we had our first baby and Covid hit, and I was awakened to how pre-school and school in general might not be the first choice for our family.

So, no we have a 5 year old, 3 year old, an 18 month old, and a baby due really at any moment. Life is pretty crazy, so…let’s add homeschool. Our 5 year old has beamed this entire month of learning. Our 3 year old too. We choose to use My Fathers World Kindergarten curriculum. We choose this one because I wanted something all-inclusive as I learn the ropes, and learn to balance life with an additional newborn baby coming. I also wanted something that incorporated the Bible throughout each lesson. I love how My Fathers World weaves in biblical lessons into language arts, math, science. It feels so seamless.

Learning really can be fun, imagine that. Our 3 year old, Little Miss, does pretty much everything with us at the table. We start off first thing in the morning while the kids eat breakfast. I do all of the reading, review time then, and as soon as they are finished eating our 5 year old, Big Man, does his worksheet while Little Miss colors, and then they do some kind of drawing/tactile activity that relates to the lesson.

Being a pediatric occupational therapist has taught me pretty good skills in scaling activities up or down depending on the skill level and interest of the child. So, this has been very helpful in finding ways to have Little Miss do activities with us. I’ve also never been a strict rule follower, so if there is an activity that is recommended in the curriculum but doesn’t match the kids interest, we just switch it out. The joys of homeschool right?

So, yes, we are absolutely loving it and have a pretty good routine down, just in time for a newborn baby to come and change it all up 🙂

  1. We are in the same boat! We just started homeschooling this year and are also using My Father’s World. My children range from 4-10 (and one on the way) and so far that curriculum has been amazing! We also added in math from Masters Books (Answers in Genesis) and have loved that also. Great, encouraging post!
